2014-04-20 Worimi National Park (VKFF-0614)

So after qualifying Worimi Regional Park (VKFF-1788), I went for bite to eat at McDonalds Williamtown and then on to Worimi National Park.

This is the same image from the pervious park as I only turned on APRS on leaving VKFF-1788.

The McDonalds was on Lavis lane just to te east of Cabbage Tree Rd. Then headed up Nelson By Rd.

Until I got to Boyces Trail. Unfortunately, there is a locked gate here so I had to park just outside it and carry everything in.

This gives an overview of all of the parks in the area. Given how quick I had finished the previous I was starting to wonder if I’d manage another one of these (perhaps Medowie?). Things did not turn out that way.

Another option would be to activate Great Lakes Marine park by being within 100m of the water. There are a number of opportunities for this along Nelson Bay Rd.

Definitely inside the park.

That’s pretty close to where I set up the pole.  There was a tree about 30 away from the gate that I could string the antenna to.

The Activation

Remembered to snap a picture of the park sign.

The locked gate. I moved the car over to the right in case someone with a key actually wanted to access the trail (they didn’t).

The inactive side of the dipole was tied to tis tree which is te one just to the left of the gate.

dsc_0013Looking at where I set the pole up.

I ended up with the table just to teh camera side of the pole. Unfortunately I forgot t take more photos.

The activation started a lot more slowly than the previous park and I did start to get concerned that I might not make it (silly me).

Worked on a number of bands (80, 40, 30, 20 & 18). I didn’t manage any contacts on 20 & 18.

As I saw it getting closer to sunset (about an hour) I had six to get and was really getting concerned about not getting there, when 40m opened up to Europe.

Now, I normally run only 6 watts so Europe is something I generally don’t get. Today, however, I still had a bit of the 12H battery left and an untouched 7AH battery so I cranked up the linear amplified to 100W.

Oh my.

I was getting European stations calling me! This was a brand new and exciting experience.

I managed to get decent contacts in ON4, IK8, EA2, ON4, DL8 & G3; all SSB, which was a completely new experience for me.

Dropped to 80m to grab a couple more, as I had mentioned that I’d do 80m and had not got there.

Started packing up just on sunset and completed in full dark.

Had fun explaining what I was doing o a few families who were bushwalking down this trail. How much more exciting would it have sounded if they had come past after the DX.
